First record of the non-native three spot gourami, Trichogaster trichopterus (Pallas 1770) (Teleostei: Osphronemidae) in Jamaica
Five specimens of the non-native three spot gourami (Osphronemidae: Trichogaster trichopterus) were collected from a small pond near the northern coast of Jamaica in June 2009. The collection represents the first documentation of this species in Jamaica. Origin of the introduction is not known. Herein, we discuss the occurrence of this species in Jamaica and possible threats posed to the island...
متن کاملEnvironmental modulation of the onset of air breathing and survival of Betta splendens and Trichopodus trichopterus.
The effect of hypoxia on air-breathing onset and survival was determined in larvae of the air-breathing fishes, the three spot gourami Trichopodus trichopterus and the Siamese fighting fish Betta splendens. Larvae were exposed continuously or intermittently (12 h nightly) to an oxygen partial pressure (PO2 ) of 20, 17 and 14 kPa from 1 to 40 days post-fertilization (dpf). Survival and onset of ...
متن کاملCardiorespiratory physiological phenotypic plasticity in developing air‐breathing anabantid fishes (Betta splendens and Trichopodus trichopterus)
Developmental plasticity of cardiorespiratory physiology in response to chronic hypoxia is poorly understood in larval fishes, especially larval air-breathing fishes, which eventually in their development can at least partially "escape" hypoxia through air breathing. Whether the development air breathing makes these larval fishes less or more developmentally plastic than strictly water breathin...
متن کاملA new species of Atrichopleura Bezzi (Diptera, Empididae, Empidinae) from Ceará, Brazil.
Atrichopleura Bezzi, 1909 occurs in different regions of the Southern Hemisphere (24 Neotropical species, 2 Afrotropical species and 2 Australasian species). A new species collected in the Brazilian state of Ceará, A. acuminata sp. nov. is described and illustrated. This is the first record of the genus from northeastern Brazil. A modified key to the five Brazilian species is presented.
متن کاملNative and alien plant species inventory and diversity in disturbed forests and its economic value
The study was conducted to assess the native and alien plant species in one of the highly disturbed forest (S1) and less disturbed forest (S2) in Mt. Manunggal, Cebu Island, Philippines. Twenty-four quadrats with a size of 20mx20 m were established using a quadrat sampling technique to identify and record all plant species. Diversity indices were utilized to determine species abundance, richnes...
